The route and drive time
The driver heads south through Rayong, then east on Route 3 through Chanthaburi and into Trat province. The last stretch turns off toward the coast for the piers at Laem Ngop and Ao Thammachat.
Plan on about 3.5 to 4 hours, plus a comfort stop. Holiday weekends add time around Rayong. Leaving Pattaya in the morning gives you plenty of room for the ferry and an afternoon on the island.
The ferry to Koh Chang
Car ferries cross from Ao Thammachat (Centrepoint) and nearby piers to the island in roughly 30 to 45 minutes. Walk-on fares are roughly ฿80 to ฿100 per person, but check before you go as operators change prices and timetables.
The last ferry usually leaves in the early evening, and times shift with the season and the weather. Tell us which boat you aim for and we set the pickup with a buffer. If you will arrive late, a night in Trat or near the pier is better than a race.
Taxi vs bus and minivan
Public options exist but rarely go direct from Pattaya. Prices are approximate; check before you go.
| Option | Time | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private taxi | 3.5 to 4 hours to the pier | ฿2,600 per car | Door to pier, any hour, room for bags |
| Minivan | 5 hours or more | About ฿400 to ฿600 per person | Fixed times, limited luggage, often hotel pickups |
| Bus via Trat | 6 hours or more with changes | Varies | Change in Rayong or Chanthaburi, then a songthaew to the pier |
Coming from Bangkok instead?
If you start in the capital or at Suvarnabhumi, the drive is longer but similar. See our Bangkok to Koh Chang taxi guide.
Stops worth making
- Chanthaburi: gem market at weekends and a good lunch town.
- Rayong: fruit stalls in season, and the turnoff for Ban Phe if you change plans to Koh Samet.
- Trat: quiet town for an overnight if you miss the last ferry.
Booking tips
- Give the hotel in Pattaya and your Koh Chang hotel so we know which side of the ferry you need.
- Mention the ferry you want; we time the pickup around it.
- Big groups with luggage should pick the van tier.
