The route around the gulf
The driver takes Motorway 7 toward Bangkok, then the outer ring road to cross the Chao Phraya south of the city, and joins Route 35 (Rama II) toward Samut Songkhram. From there Route 4 runs south past Phetchaburi and Cha-am into Hua Hin.
Allow 3.5 to 4.5 hours. The ring road and Rama II get busy on Friday evenings and holiday weekends, so a morning start is usually smoother.
The Pattaya to Hua Hin ferry
A passenger ferry across the gulf has run on and off for years, but it is seasonal and irregular, and it is suspended in rough weather. If you want to try it, check it is actually running for your dates before you plan around it. When it is not, the road is the only direct way.
